Under-Sink Storage Drawers

An under-sink drawer.   An under-sink drawer.

The cabinet under the kitchen sink is so convenient – and so useless. But you don’t have to move the pipes completely out of the way in order to capitalize on the storage space.

The cabinet under the sink in this kitchen (left) was 24 inches from front to back and a robust 36 inches wide. Rerouting the pipes opened up room for two drawers, each 22 inches from front to back and 12 inches deep. A ready-made beech cabinet that matches the rest of the kitchen cabinetry slipped right into the standard cabinet opening; the face panel for the side-by-side top drawers was adapted to become a false front.

Behind that false front is a short pipe that replaces the more typical long ones. A direct connect elbow just 2 inches down from the sink routes the pipes toward the back wall, and extended pipes push the trap all the way to the rear of the cabinet, clearing the way for the drawers. The bottom drawer stores canned goods, while the top drawer holds extra serving dishes and miscellaneous items.

An altered under-sink pipe.
  1. THE READY-MADE under-sink unit matches the rest of the kitchen cabinetry in style and proportions. Pipes occupy the top-drawer space, though, so the fronts for those drawers were installed as stationary panels.
  2. INSTEAD OF EXTENDING several inches straight down from the drain, the pipes in this assembly come down just 2 inches before running to the back of the cabinet opening.
  3. TWO LARGE DRAWERS fit nicely once the pipes were routed to the back of the cabinet space.
